Earlier, the Honourable Supreme Court had issued a notice to the Centre, MCI and NTA on the petition filed by the parents of NEET UG 2020 applicants working in Qatar whose demand for allocation of NEET UG exam centres in Gulf region was dismissed by the Kerala High Court.
In response, the NTA filed an affidavit in which the testing agency pointed out that NEET UG has to be conducted in Single Shift at the same time on the same day to maintain uniformity and further, the NEET question papers and other exam materials are to be transported from the NTA headquarters to a large number of NEET UG exam centres in various cities which requires meticulous planning for safe and secured delivery of the same at the centre on time.
The NTA told the Honourable Supreme Court that it is not possible to hold NEET UG 2020 overseas as the examination is conducted in pen and paper-based mode. Hence, aspirants may have to take the exam, scheduled on September 13, in the offline mode unless the apex court decides otherwise.
The NTA has also rejected the argument of foreign students that exam centres for JEE (Main) 2020 had been set up in some cities abroad. The testing agency said that no parity can be drawn between NEET UG and JEE (Main). The number of engineering seats in comparison to the number of MBBS seats in the country is more and thus MBBS seats attract stiffer competition compared to engineering seats.
Since large number of student have registered for NEET UG, it is not feasible to conduct NEET UG 2020 in online mode in single shift for all the applicants. Therefore there is no discrimination between the applicants of NEET UG 2020 and JEE (Main) 2020 nor there is any violation of the fundamental rights of the NEET UG applicants as claimed in the writ petition filed by the parents.
