In a major move that is going to enhance the availability of specialist doctors even in remote corners of the Country, the Medical Council of India Board of Governors and the Central Government have given their recognition nod to the eight 2-year Diploma courses (Post MBBS) granted by the National Board of Examinations (NBE).
With this, the NBE which currently offers DNB and FNB courses would also be offering two-year Diploma post MBBS course. The move comes as the government has realised scarcity of specialized doctors in the Country during the Corona Pandemic.
The two-year diploma course from NBE will include Diploma in Anaesthesiology (DA), Diploma in Obstetrics & Gynaecology (DGO), Diploma in Paediatrics (DCH), Diploma in Family Medicine (DFM), Diploma in Ophthalmology (DO), Diploma in ENT, Diploma in Radio-diagnosis (DMRD), Diploma in Tuberculosis & Chest Disease (DTCD). These shall be recognized medical qualifications when granted by the New Delhi based NBE after August, 2020.
The NBE has clarified that the hospitals with a minimum of 100 operational beds are eligible to seek accreditation with the NBE for the diploma courses. Keeping into consideration the requirement of the States and to reduce dependency on tier-I cities for providing healthcare, 50% of the NBE Diploma seats in the districts hospitals of a State shall be reserved for In-Service students of the State concerned.
