AIIMS and a New Medical Education Policy in Karnataka State

Date: 04-Jan-2021

Karnataka is all set to have a new medical policy and more medical colleges through Public Private Partnership (PPP) as said by Dr. K Sudhakar, Minister for Health and Medical Education. There is a need for more medical colleges in Karnataka to meet the need of doctors in the state. A medical institution would require 600-700 crore of investment and PPP would reduce the burden on the state.

The establishment of Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre in Shivajinagar, an institute which has 150 seats for MBBS course can be considered as the first step of the new change. Karnataka is the second state to take up such a step after Gujarat.

As per the guidelines set by the World Health Organization (WHO), there is a need of one doctor for a population of 1000 but India has got one doctor for a population of 10,000-12,000. To decrease this ratio, there is an urgent need to build up medical colleges in India and medical colleges in Karnataka. 157 medical colleges have been added over the last six years by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Central Government also has a vision to add up to 22 AIIMS around the country, one in each state.

Dr. Sudhakar added that the state has a plan of setting up an AIIMS in the state as well, the best training institution in medical education. The process of getting permission has begun and there would be soon a functional AIIMS in the state too. This would bring a new medical and education policy in the state. The minister also added that the state is increasing the bed capacity at district hospitals to provide better facilities even at those places where there are no medical colleges in Karnataka.
