The State Government has sanctioned the opening of three Government medical colleges in Punjab, said Minister of Medical Education Om Prakash Soni. These three colleges are to be set up in Mohali, Hoshiarpur and Kapurthala. The Government medical college in Mohali is supposed to start in 2021 while the other two by 2022, added the minister.
In the list, there is also a burn unit and a trauma center to start at the Rajindra Hospital, Patiala; a cancer center at a cost of 120 crore in Amritsar and the Department of Virology at Government medical college, Amritsar. The Government is also planning to open new sub-stations, hostels, operation theatres and a super-specialty block in different medical colleges of Punjab.
The proceedings to set up State of Art Advanced Virology Center at a cost of Rs 550 crore have been initiated by the Punjab Government which is being funded by the ICMR, said Minister Soni. New recruitments for creating posts in Dental colleges in Punjab at Patiala and Amritsar are also lined up in the row. The completion of the PGI Satellite center in Sangrur is aimed to be completed in 2021-22 while a new satellite center in Ferozepur is decided to start soon.
Like in 2020 when 293 doctors, 211 nurses and 20 paramedical staffs were recruited to enhance hospitals in combating COVID-19 along with the 1822 additional outsourced posts, the Department of medical Education and Research has also proposed 726 recruitments including 142 doctors, 189 nurses and 234 technicians under the Ghar Ghar Rozgar Yojna to strengthen the department.
