The Central Government has informed the High court Of Madras that introducing reservation or exclusive quota for government school students would hamper the authenticity of NEET Merit. Any such quota not only hampers the general way of admission but also breaks the uniformity of pre-medical education. Any of these horizontal reservations would undo the reform of merit based admissions.
This was done after a student of Pondicherry filed a petition for approving the scheme of introducing 10% horizontal reservations for students from government schools within the Union Territory of Pondicherry for admissions to MBBS and BDS courses. This reservation was approved by the elected cabinet of Pondicherry but lieutenant governor Kiran Bedi referred this matter to the Central Government disagreeing with the elected government. The Union then submitted its reply saying that any such reservation dilutes the merit of NEET by providing a separate quota for students of government schools. Passing of such reservations might again bring similar demands by other states.
The submission of the ministry was made before Justice B Pugalendhi where the ministry also said that 7.5% horizontal reservation provided for government school pass out students to medical admission in Tamil Nadu had been provided through legislation enacted by the state government and no reference had been made to the Centre for information/concurrence in the matter."
The hearing was adjourned till 25th February as the counsel for Central Government sought time in filing a report.
