The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare is not in favour of conducting NEET exam for MBBS admissions twice a year. The Health Minister Harsh Vardhan conveyed the matter to Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal after consultations with the National Medical Commission (NMC). However, Education Minister Pokhriyal has asked the health ministry to reconsider the decision.
There were speculations going on since a long time to conduct NEET exam twice a year. Many students appeared before the court and the Ministry of Education with the request to conduct NEET twice a year. Students had to say that there are chances for a student not to appear for the exam for a number of reasons. Students had also requested to conduct NEET in online mode.
Dr Aruna V Vanikar, who is the president of the Undergraduate Medical Education Board, has informed that the final decision is yet to come and that the government is yet to make any final decision on the matter. The official also said that Pokhriyal’s request of conducting NEET twice a year was met with deliberations by the Health Ministry after the National Medical Commission (NMC) gave its view on the case which is responsible for the syllabus of the test.
NMC and Health Ministry’s reluctance for conducting NEET twice a year is mostly because it was their call to decide the matter and not in the hands of National Testing Agency (NTA). The proposal given by Pokhriyal raised the hopes of thousands of students who wanted NEET to be conducted twice a year. While there were no official comments made by NTA, the agency had formally written to the Ministry of Health to conduct NEET exams online earlier this month to make it easier for the Lakh of students who register for the exam every year.
