There are contemplations going on in the Ministry of Health to take up the entire process of medical admissions at Deemed Medical Colleges in India to promote transparency and cut off agents and deal-makers who auction medical seats. If so happens, the last round of institutional choice-filling will be scrapped. The admissions to medical colleges in India might also happen online. This will ease out the high-stress admission process of travelling and deal-making at deemed medical colleges in India from next year.
Deemed Universities across the country conduct the admission for vacant seats after the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) hand over the process to the respective institutions across the country. The parents and students are then put into high stress as the NRI seats are auctioned for MBBS admissions which are five times more expensive than the normal seats.
Students are cornered when they reach the respective colleges as the colleges wait for the highest bid for a seat for which partial money is taken in cash and rest in cheque. These colleges show the government that the fees had to be brought down to fulfill the vacant seats. Such an incident happened in a medical college in Nasik when 10 NRI seats were filled up on the last day of the admission by various categories of students. The government, this year didn’t allow these colleges to change NRI seats to Indian students but that has not changed anything because of the high donations that has made a comeback.
Around 2463 seats were vacant when MCC closed admissions this year but the last moment filling up of the seats and if admissions are happening on the basis of merit is not known to anyone.
