The Tamil Nadu Health Department has issued a Government order to reduce the fee structure for medical admissions at Rajah Muthiah Medical College, Rajah Muthiah Dental College and Rani Meyammai College of Nursing which were earlier affiliated to Annamalai University.
In contrast to high fees that students were paying earlier, MBBS course fee will now be Rs. 13,160 a year, BDS course fee will be Rs. 11, 610 and Nursing Course fee will be Rs. 5000 per annum. The fees for postgraduate courses will be Rs. 30,000 a year and for PG Diplomas will be Rs. 20,000 a year. The fee for the students who were admitted through single window counselling by the Directorate of Medical Education for two years now had to pay fees way beyond what is paid at self-financing colleges.
This fee reduction in three medical colleges in Tamil Nadu was after the continuous strikes by students against the high fees. These students decided to boycott emergency services at Annamalai University. The University closed its premises indefinitely and asked the students to vacate the hostels but the protests continued. The Higher Education Department handed the colleges to the Health Department thereafter.
These colleges are now affiliated to the Tamil Nadu Dr. M. G. R. University and the names of these colleges had been changed to Government Medical College, Government Dental College and Government Nursing College in Annamalai Nagar, Tamil Nadu.
