MBBS Admissions Extended by a Week to Fill Vacant Seats
Date: 09-Feb-2021The medical admissions to undergraduate medical colleges in India have been extended by a week to fill up vacant seats following the order of the Supreme Court of India. This was announced by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) through a circular on February 8 which mentioned that admissions to MBBS courses will now continue till February 11 to fill up the vacant seats in deemed institutes.
According to the information provided by MCC, there are as many as 5 seats vacant in 5 institutes of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) whose admissions will be conducted by AIIMS. Similarly, there are as many as 37 vacant seats in 5 deemed institutes under NRI and Management Quotas which includes 17 vacant NRI seats in DY Patil Medical College, Navi Mumbai. Admissions to these seats will be conducted by a second offline Stray Vacancy round which will be conducted by the Directorate General of Health Sciences (DGHS).
The reason behind the vacant NRI seats is reasoned as the financial strain that many families had to go through because of the result of Covid-19 and the lockdown in 2020. Higher education institutes can charge up to five times the regular fees of an Open Category seat for 15% seats reserved under the NRI and Management Quotas as per the Fee Regulating Authority. Private medical institutes and dental institutes including deemed colleges charge as much as three to five times the regular fees for seats under management and NRI quotas, which many students might not be able to afford this year. It is because of this financial strain that most of the seats are vacant under the NRI and Management Quota.
