A notice issued in Maharastra has created a stir among 50 private medical colleges in Maharashtra. This notice was issued by the Fee Regulating Authority (FRA) to these colleges for overcharging excess of fees during medical admissions. These colleges have been sought an explanation for charging Rs. 1-2 Lakh for caution money alone. A few of these colleges are questioned for not displaying their fee structure on their college portal.
These medical colleges have been found of asking Rs. 2 Lakh for caution money. Other than this deposit, the college also charges for laboratory, hostel and gymkhana deposits. Library deposits of Rs 25,000-50,000 really puts pressure on students because students do not even use library books worth Rs 25,000 these days and misplacing books worth Rs. 25,000 is quite a task for any student. There was also a college which was found of charging Rs. 1 Lakh refundable amount for some academic club. The Authority has asked all these colleges to submit written responses for charging additional money from students.
The duration of the course in these colleges is around four and half years. Students forget or let go of the deposit money by the end of their course which is the common strategy of these colleges. While most of these colleges charge huge amounts saying it as refundable, arranging all the money at once along with the course fee and other fees charged by the private medical colleges is quite a task for both the students and their parents.
