Fivefold Fine On Surrendering of MBBS Seats In Karnataka

Date: 16-Mar-2021

The State Government has decided to put up a new public policy against selling up medical seats in Karnataka. This would increase the current penalty of surrendering MBBS seats from Rs. 5 lakh to Rs. 25 lakh. The new policy would come into effect from the next academic year which was assured by the Health and Medical Education Minister K. Sudhakar on Monday in the Legislative Council.

The minister added that an expert committee of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) was set up to investigate about the issue which has submitted its report to the Government which has recommended the fivefold rise in penalty to avoid selling seats in medical colleges in Karnataka.

While replying to a question posed by BJP member N. Ravikumar, who sought to know what action had been initiated against erring private medical colleges in Karnataka, the minister said that these private medical colleges get hold of meritorious students who clear NEET exam and hold seats under the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) which are later surrendered by paying a penalty amount. These surrendered seats are later added under the management quota which is sold by the Private Medical Colleges in huge amount. Out of the 65 medical colleges in Karnataka, 45 are run by the Private Management. The new policy would help in forbidding the misuse of the loopholes of law set by the Supreme Court of India.
