5000 Nursing Seats Remaining Vacant in Private Colleges

Date: 30-Oct-2019

Even after conducting three walk-in counselling sessions in the last one month to fill vacant seats, 103 Private Nursing Colleges have about 5000 vacant seats. Even four Government Nursing Colleges (Badal, Faridkot, Goindwal Sahib and Jalalabad) were unable to fill their nursing seats.

The Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS), in another attempt to fill the vacant nursing seats in Govt. Nursing Colleges has invited students for walk-in counselling on 30 October 2019.

Previously, nursing seats in Government Nursing Colleges were much sought-after and there was high competition among students in the entrance exam for these seats. However, this time many seats remain unfilled which includes State Institute of Nuring, Badal where 23 out of 25 M.Sc Seats are vacant, Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital, Sangrur, and University College of Nursing where 16 out of total 35 seats in oncology and neonatal nursing courses are vacant.

Mr. H C Rawat, Dean (Exam), Nursing, BFUHS is hopeful of filling up vacant seats in this walk-in session. According to sources in BFUHS, around 3,500 B.Sc seats, 500 M.Sc. Seats and 2,200 B.Sc. (Post Basic) Nursing seats are vacant.

Although the norms to fill vacant seats were relaxed by the BFUHS and Nursing Colleges, the colleges could not fill up their seats. The problem is attributed to high migration to foreign countries on educational Visas.

Punjab State has 103 Private Nursing Colleges and Six Government Nursing Colleges. 96 of these Nursing colleges have been issued notice from the BFUHS to meet the deficiencies, which include inadequate faculty and poor infrastructure, and pay outstanding dues some time ago.

With huge migration of students to Australia, Canada and the US, not only Nursing colleges but many of the dental colleges in Punjab are also facing a depressing future. Despite conducting four counselling rounds and offering incentives and concessions in fee, dental colleges in Punjab have 354 seats vacant out of total 1,218 BDS seats.

According to a BFUHS official, the huge migration of students has not only impacted the BDS admissions and Nursing admissions, even in the MBBS course, the quality of students is getting poorer with each passing year.
