State Government Hikes MBBS Fee in Punjab Medical Colleges

Date: 01-Jun-2020

The Punjab Government as per the cabinet decision of May 27, announced to increase the fee in medical colleges in Punjab for the MBBS course. The reason for the hike in MBBS Fee was to ensure better medical education and infrastructure facilities for medical students.

The MBBS Fee in Punjab is highest when compared to the neighboring states. The fee for the MBBS course in government medical colleges has been hiked from Rs. 4.4 lakh to Rs. 7.8 lakh for the full course. The fee for government quota seats has been increased from Rs. 13.4 lakh to Rs. 18.6 lakh and the fee for the management quota has been hiked from Rs. 40.3 lakh to Rs. 47 lakh.

The decision taken by the Punjab Government has been strongly opposed by the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), a political party in Punjab. Not only this, but it has also discouraged brilliant medical students coming from poor families who have dreamed to become doctors and serve in the nation.

Medical Education and Research Minister O P Soni said the decision to hike the fee for MBBS admission in Punjab was to provide good infrastructure and impart quality medical education to the students at the current fee rates.
