Government Medical Colleges

MBBS seats in Government medical colleges in Karnataka are available through All India Quota (AIQ) and State Quota (KEA). The All India Quota constitutes 15% of total MBBS seats in Government medical colleges whereas the State Quota constitutes the remaining 85% of MBBS seats.

The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) conducts NEET UG counselling for AIQ seats for which all NEET qualified students, irrespective of their domicile State, are eligible to compete for

On the other hand, the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) conducts KEA Counselling for State Quota seats for which only Karnataka students fulfilling the criteria set by the State Government are eligible.The MCC counselling for AIQ seats is conducted in two online rounds after which the vacant MBBS seats are reverted to State quota whereas the KEA NEET Counselling for MBBS in Karnataka under State quota is conducted in two online rounds followed by an offline mop-up round based on the seat vacancies.

MBBS fees in Government medical colleges in Karnataka are nominal. Securing MBBS admissions in Government medical colleges in Karnataka is quite competitive. A NEET UG score of 620+ would be required for candidates belonging to the General category under AIQ while a NEET UG score of 550+ would be required for General Merit Students under the State quota.

Private Medical Colleges

MBBS Seats in Private medical colleges in Karnataka are divided into A-Category (Government seats), B-Category (Private seats) & C-Category (Others Quota seats & NRI seats).

40% of Seats in Private colleges & 25% of Seats in Private Minority Colleges are reserved as A-category seats. Only Karnataka students fulfilling any of the clauses set by the State Govt. can compete for these A-category seats.

40% of seats in Private colleges & 55% of seats in Private Minority colleges are reserved as

Private Medical Colleges

B-category seats. 50% of total B-category seats in Private medical colleges are available for Karnataka students & the remaining 50% seats are available as Open quota seats for which all Indian citizens are eligible. 66% of B-category seats in Private Minority medical colleges are filled by respective religious/linguistic minority students. Of the remaining 34% seats, 50% seats are reserved for Karnataka students & the remaining 50% seats are reserved for All India candidates.

C-category seats are further classified as Others & NRI seats. The Others quota seats constitute 5% of the total seats for which all students except NRI/NRI wards are eligible whereas NRI seats constitute 10% of total seats for which only NRI/NRI Wards are eligible.

The MBBS fee structure varies for each category of seats. Generally, the fee for C-category seats is on a higher side.

Deemed Medical Colleges

MCC conducts NEET UG counselling for deemed medical colleges in Karnataka. All NEET qualified students are eligible to participate in MCC counselling for deemed medical colleges in Karnataka. However, some deemed medical colleges reserved a certain percentage of MBBS seats to State quota for which only Karnataka students are eligible for which the counselling is conducted by KEA. MBBS seats in deemed medical colleges are categorized into Management/Paid seats & NRI seats.

Deemed Medical Colleges

All NEET-UG qualified students including NRI/NRI sponsored/OCI/PIO are eligible to compete for management seats while for NRI seats only NRI/NRI sponsored/OCI/PIO students are eligible to participate. There is no category quota seat reservation in deemed colleges as the seat allotment is purely based on the option exercised & secured NEET All India Rank.

To opt for MBBS management/NRI seats through MCC, the students are required to register through MCC counselling by paying a security amount of Rs. 2 Lakhs along with a registration fee. MBBS fees for NRI seats are on a higher side compared to Management seats. To opt for State quota seats in Deemed universities through KEA, eligible Karnataka students are required to register through KEA counselling. MBBS fees for State quota seats in deemed medical colleges are comparatively lower than Management/NRI seats.

The process of securing MBBS admissions in Karnataka is through NEET UG counselling conducted at Central level by MCC and State level by KEA. Let us understand each of these NEET counselling processes in detail.

NEET UG Central Counselling Process

The Central level counselling is open to all NEET UG qualified students provided they register for participation in the counselling process. The counselling is conducted simultaneously for AIQ seats in Government medical colleges and Management and NRI seats in deemed medical colleges. To opt for only AIQ seats, one has to register with MCC by paying a security amount of Rs. 10,000 with registration fee of Rs. 1000 whereas to opt for deemed medical colleges, a security amount of Rs. 2 Lakhs is to be paid with registration fee of Rs. 5000. In case if one wants to opt for both AIQ seats and deemed medical colleges, then a security fee of Rs. 2 lakhs along with the registration fee of 5000 can be paid.

AIQ Counselling:

The AIQ counselling for Government medical colleges in Karnataka is conducted in two online rounds. The AIQ seats are categorized into Unreserved, SC, ST, OBC and PH. The students belonging to reserved categories are eligible to opt for seats under reserved quota irrespective of their domicile state. After two rounds of online MCC AIQ counselling, the vacant seats are reverted to State quota for which the counselling is conducted by KEA. The fee structure for AIQ seats is fixed by the State Government and varies for different colleges. The NEET Cutoff ranks for AIQ seats are very high and demands one to have high score to compete for these seats

Deemed Medical Counselling

The MCC counselling for deemed medical colleges in Karnataka is conducted in three online rounds. The MBBS seats are categorized into Management/Paid seats and NRI seats. All registered NEET qualified students are eligible for MBBS Management seats including NRI/NRI sponsored students whereas only NRI/NRI sponsored students are eligible for MBBS NRI seats. After three online rounds of MCC deemed counselling, the vacant seats are reverted to respective deemed universities for which the counselling is conducted by respective deemed university in offline mode. The MBBS management fees and MBBS NRI fees are fixed by respective deemed universities and varies for different colleges. Generally, MBBS fee structure for NRI seats is higher than management seats. The NEET cutoff ranks are lower for deemed medical colleges due to higher fee structures.

The KEA counselling is open to all NEET qualified students provided they register for participation in the counselling process. The KEA counselling is conducted in two online rounds followed by offline mop-up round, after which, the seats remaining vacant are reverted to respective colleges for the conduct of college level admissions.

The MBBS fee structure varies for different type of seats. The fee is nominal for A-category seats whereas the fee for B-category seats is comparatively more. On the other hand, the fee for C-category seats is on a higher side.

The NEET Cutoff ranks for A-category seats are quite high whereas the Cutoff ranks are comparatively lower for B-category seats. However, the competition remains tough for non-Karnataka students in B-category as limited number of seats are made available for them. The NEET cutoff ranks for C-category seats are much lower due to higher fee structures.
